R&LHS makes annual awards for contributions of lasting value to the interpretation of North American railroad history and its contexts. The awards committee accepts suggestions from members through May 30 each year. To make a suggestion, please include a paragraph telling the committee why you believe R&LHS should give the award. The awards committee makes the nominations and selects the winners. The R&LHS does not conduct its awards program as an annual competition or contest. There are no application forms. Awards are not given posthumously.
The winner in each category will receive national recognition through the R&LHS, an award certificate, and $250.

cover published date of 2017, 2016, or 2015 of lasting significance to the interpretation

Fred A. and Jane R. Stindt Photography Award. A significant body of work over a
long period of time, or a single photographic project or publication, making an
outstanding contribution to the photographic interpretation of North America's railroading
Gerald M. Best Senior Achievement Award. For significant and long-standing
contributions to the writing, preservation, and interpretation of railroad history.
Railroad Documentary Award. An outstanding video project, released in the last three-years that creatively and accurately educates viewers about one or more aspects of North America's railroading history. The documentary must be easy to follow, concise, and deliver a message that is clearly understood.
The award recognizes outstanding videos in two categories--hobbyist/student produced with no budget and professionally produced with a budget. In film, the scope/budget/parties involved have much more influence on the final product than a single photographer and the image. That is the reason for two categories. Nominations are made by a subcommittee of the R&LHS awards committee.
